Cobram-Barooga take the JB Shield
Posted on: 18 May
On Friday 16 May, a nice fine autumn day at Hill Top Tatura a great field of keen women gathered to compete for the Joyce Broadbent Shield played in conjunction with the Hill Top Bowl.
The Joyce Broadbent Shield as the name suggests has been played annually since 1972 in honour of Joyce Broadbent, one of the greatest golfers to ever play the game throughout the Goulburn Murray District and State wide events.
The format of both events is a Stableford competition with three members per Club team having their scores totaled as the team score. However, the team players are separated and play with representatives of other clubs. The calculation and announcement of winning scores add to the excitement of the day.
While the players enjoyed a great lunch Hill Top vice captain Bev Roberts verified all the scores and sorted the prize list. President Colleen Johns welcomed all the visitors from 9 clubs around the Goulburn Murray District as well as thanking all the helpers of staff and volunteers who made the day possible.
Individual prizes were awarded in Divisions and age categories:
Division One: Margot McGrath (Numurkah) 36 points. Deb Cairns (Numurkah) 35 points
Division Two: Chris Kelly (Parkland) 35 points. Liz Mulcahy (Hill Top) 33 points
Division Three: Ros Wright (Shepparton) 37 points. Leesa Barnes (Nathalia) 36 points.
Young Chicks Deb Cairns. Veterans Ros Wright

Nearest the pins were collected by players from four different clubs, Josie New, Deb Greenwood, Christine Hadland and Sharon Jefferies
The major emphasis of the day is the team event and given that the two events were played in conjunction with each other and that all teams were from within the GMGA District a “double up” was inevitable. It was a Cobram-Barooga team of Terry Mentha 37, Beth Bull 32 and Jenny Gould 28 for a total of 97 points who took home the shield and the bowl.

GMGA President congratulated the winners and presented the Joyce Broadbent Shield and added thanks to Hill Top for hosting the event so well.
Runners up were a Shepparton team of Kim D’Arma, Adele Baensch and Sue Lowe with 95 points.
The conditions of the Hill Top Bowl allow players from clubs to enter “pick up” teams being different from the combination of players in each team as entered in the main event. A Cobram-Barooga grouping of Joan Boyer, Terry Mentha and Veronica Irving claimed this prize with a total of 107 points.
A great day. Thanks to Hill Top and to all players.
Winners are grinners and can laugh with the Joyce Broadbent Shield
