Wash Up of Country Teams Event

Posted on: 6 October

Firstly thanks to players for their efforts and thanks to those who contacted me about the results.  I think most interested people were able to get all the results and details from the GA website. However, for the record I will give a summary of our achievements.        David Roberts  CTE Manager

Women results

Day One played at The Sands Torquay.  Morning versus Murray Darling District we gained a 4/3 win.  In the afternoon it was against Western District and we suffered a big loss 1.5/5.5. (The one that got away)

Day Two played at 13th Beach. Morning versus Ballarat District and a very tight match which we eventually won 4/3 gained through 3 individual wins and two squared.  In the afternoon the “girls” had the bye to enable them to practice, go shopping or sleep after a couple of early starts.

Day Three, the last round, played Wednesday morning at Portarlington where we played our neighbours from North East District. A great effort resulted in a 5/2 victory from the 7 individual matches.

After team matches against the four other Districts it was Ballarat and GM both with 3 wins and 1 loss and so to decide the winning team, the separation went to winning margins, points for and against with Ballarat having the better winning margins.  Congratulations to Ballarat District.

Overall a great effort from the Goulburn Murray women’s team.   From left to right in the photo below: Marcia Spiers (RR), Julie Daniel (Num), Sonya Hill (Shepp), Kim Morris (Capt Shepp), Tracy Clouston (Num), Casey Chandler (Cob-Bar), Rhylee Chapman (RR) and Nacole Horneman (RR)

Big thanks to Mandy Faram for her assistance with the women’s team with the day to day management.

Men results

Day One morning at The Sands, versus Murray Darling District where we suffered a big defeat 1/6, although three of the individual matches were lost 1 down.  I they had just gone the other way !!! The “boys” had the bye in the afternoon when some played Curlewis GC for practice.

Day Two at 13th Beach, morning. versus West Gippsland and we reversed the previous day with a dominant display to record a 6/1 victory.   The afternoon match was against Ballarat District and in the cold evening air at the finish a tied match was registered, 3.5 each, which included a couple of real nail biters.

Day Three and final round in the morning at Portarlington against South Gippsland and again another couple of nail biter matches early and a good finish to enable us to record a 4/3 team win.

Another great team effort and great camaraderie between all the players and opposing teams. From left to right in the photo below:   Luke Dixon (Shepp), Daniel Adem (Shepp), Darcy Whyte (RR), Mitch Grandell (Num), Brett Kellow (Capt, Moo), Chris Tomlinson (Cob-Bar), Jeremy Rath (Shepp).   Aaron Dale from Toc is missing from the photo.

The final results for the Men’s shield saw Murray Darling District with 3 wins and 1 loss. With both Ballarat and Goulburn Murray on 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.  Ballarat had better winning margins to take second spot and the question from both teams being if either of them had won the tied match the overall Division winner may have been different.  Congratulations to Murray Darling District on a great win in a competition that was the closest for many years.

Overall comments/highlights:

Well done and thanks to Caitlan Haggis from Golf Aus who managed/organised our Division each day at each of the courses.

To Brad Chandler (Casey’s dad) and Fern Chapman (Rhylee’s sister) as full-time caddies did a great job and helped to support the teams, as did the players when rested and swap over caddies.  ,

  • From talking to other team manager, I think GMGA look after our players well.
  • D’Arcy Whyte getting a square result after being four down with four to play on day two.
  • Casey Chandler, our youngest team member (and I think the youngest player at the event) four strong wins and now undefeated in the last two years.
  • The sportsman/womanship displayed by our team members.

Insignificant lowlight = getting lost trying to find my way around The Sands course!!!

Let’s see how things shape up for next year.
