Pennant Final Winners Cob-Bar win Div 1 Final
Posted on: 3 June
It would have been a great trip home in the bus to Cobram after Cobram-Barooga won Division One pennant final played at the well presented Shepparton course on Monday (3 June). In Division Two Rich River was the winner and Tocumwal the victors in Division Three.
GMGA Women’s Event organiser Mandy Faram did a great job to get all the finals off at 9.30 from separate tees at Shepparton along with the Stableford players supporting the pennant teams. It was great to hear the well deserved thanks given to Mandy and the GMGA for pennant organisation from the winning and runner up teams. Great thanks were also extended to Shepparton GC for hosting the event, the condition of the course, and of course for the food and beverage hospitality.
In Division Three Tocumwal’s Deb Arklay and Robyn Benbow got their team off to a good start with wins over Judy Sutton and Helen Armstrong from Valley View. Von Morris then struck back for VV with a win over Sue Lawson. Noelene Duncomb registered another win for Toc over Wanda Hacon to give Toc three wins and allow Denise Baldwin and Clare Kerr to square their match. The final result 3.5/1.5 to Tocumwal
The happy Tocumwal team: Captain Denise Baldwin holding the silver cup with her teammates Deb Arklay, Robyn Benbow, Sue Lawson and Noelene Duncomb.
Division two saw the clash of the two teams who had played each other the week before and the same result prevailed with Rich River scoring a 4/1 win over Numurkah.
Marion Whatley lead off for RR with a 2/1 win over Julie Hannaford. Lyn Kingston another win for RR over Robyn Hodgkin. While the last two pairs were still on the course Cath Kelly and Margot McGrath had to go down the 19th where Cath registered another win for RR. Deb Cairns was determined to get Numurkah on the board which she did with a 3/1 win over Colleen Armstrong. Sue Byrne defeated Jeanette Adams to seal a 4/1 team win for Rich River.
Winners are grinners: The happy Rich River team players Marion Whatley, Cath Kelly, Lyn Kingston, Colleen Armstrong and Sue Byrne.
Division One was a repeat of the last couple of years with Cobram-Barooga taking on Numurkah. Numurkah were looking for four in a row, however, 2024 will be seen as the year Cob-Bar were not letting a great run continue. It was a very strong win for the riverside team.
Marg Wallace defeated Julie Kitchen although she had to go to the 19th hole to do it. (Should have sank the putt on the 18th Marg). Deb Ryan was too good for Bev Hutchins to give Cob-Bar two wins. Maxine Sadler came home in a withering run over the last four holes for a win over Numurkah’s Nola Dalton and Rowena Wallace put in a great display of golf to defeat Julie Daniel in the battle of the best two players in each team. Gai Mitchelson and Bev McIntosh were allowed a squared match to produce a final outcome of 4/5/0.5 win for Cobram-Barooga. The only thing left to do after presentations was the celebrating on the bus trip home.
We are the champions!! Division One victors, Rowena Wallace, Maxine Saddler, Cai Mitchelson, Deb Ryan and Marg Wallace.
While the pennant contestants did battle, a field of supporting players contested for an individual Stableford event. Two home club Shepparton players topped the list with a win to Helen Jennings with 35 points to Sally Naylor on 34 points. Helen Janner took nearest the pin with a great shot to the 12th green.
