Day 3 Happy and Sad
Posted on: 1 October
Day three of Division One Country Teams event was played at Mildura GC in a cool breeze environment.
The women were up against South Western District (Geelong – Colac area) and as predicted the contest was extremely tight. Our top players Kim Morris and Rowena Wallace were up against some power hitters and could not hold them off. Similar for Julie Daniel. However, in her dogged style Maxine Sadler continued in her efforts to take a 1 up win. Then some very strong wins to Nacole Horneman 6/5, Sonya Hill 3/2 and Julie Kerchen 3/1 gave GMGA a 4/3 win
In the total outcome of the women’s event. “Home” team Murray Darling won with four wins from four matches with GMGA second with two wins and a draw. South Western, Ballarat and Western followed down the ladder. Well done to our GMGA Team
For the men it was a different story when they faced “home” team Murray Darling around the Mildura course. The top order performed well with Mitch Grandell recording a 6/5 win, Chris Tomlinson 3/2 win and Daniel Adem chipped in on 18 to win the hole and get a square. However after that GMGA did not have the best of days to compete with some accomplished players around their well known course. Jeremy Rath, Sione Vaenuku, Aaron Dale and Nick Giles all battled hard but could not get the win we needed.
For the event the West Gippsland team won four out of four, Murray Darling were second with two wins from four the same as Ballarat in third, South Western finished fourth with one win and one draw while GMGA Men only managed one halved match to finished fifth and will be relegated to Division Two next year.
It was great to see the spirt of play in the matches and the camaraderie amongst all the GMGA Women and Men players and the women’s caddies. Well done and thank you. Special mentions must be give to Maxine Sadler who recorded four wins from her four matches, 3/2, 2 up, 2 up and 1 up. Similar congratulations to Mitch Grandell with four wins 4/3, 4/3, 1 up and 6/5.
The 2026 Country Teams Event will be played in Ballarat in mid September.
