Final berths decided
Posted on: 9 February
The semi-finals of Sunday Summer Pennant were played at Kialla GC 9 February. Big thanks to Kialla GC for hosting the event with a no problem start and Maria and Kaye looking after player meals.
As predicted the team matches were close.
In the Mooroopna V Merrigum-Rushworth match the M-R pair of Greg Hall and Bill Bray got off to a blistering start with a 7/6 win over Danny Ralph and Gavin Madill. Tides were turned when Peter Watts and Tony Blake (Moo) defeated Ash Sanders and Gary Eden 3/2. Then Rob Geisler and Geoff Kirk (M-R) and Tony Geisler and Ian Rathjen (M-R) came in with 2/1 wins which put M-R in an unbeatable position and the decision was made to call the last group in and record a 3.5/1.5 team win to Merrigum-Rushworth.
The other final saw Valley View take on Hill Top Tatura and this proved to be a much closer contest going to the last group, last hole, last putt.
Niki Miller and Mike Keen set HT up at the start with a 2up win over Lawrie Casey and Michael Gallivan. David Collins and Paul Kuiper immediately got VV on the board with a 3/2 win over Glenn Newton and Bec Jeffers. Tanz Dellar and Darryl Phillips posted a 3/2 win to HT followed by father and son pair of Daryl and Will Harrison gain a 2/1 win for VV. Two matches each on the score sheet. Peter Caldow and Col Barlow HT were 1 up after 17. They did not play brilliantly down 18 and it looked like Miles Gould and Jonty Sefton may have the advantage for VV, both in for 5, with Barlow left with a testing putt for his 5, which he holed, to maintain the 1 up score and a 3/2 team win to Hill Top.
Given the above results the final to be played at Hill Top Tatura (decided prior to the start of the season) will be between host club Hill-Top and close neighbours Merrigum-Rushworth. Will the selectors make any big changes around the selection tables this week?
Best wishes to all players for the final
