Summer pennant all set for finals

Posted on: 9 February

On Sunday 16 February the finals of the Summer Sunday 4 Ball Pennant will be played at Mooroopna Golf Club in what should see two very interesting clashes.

In the women’s final Cobram-Barooga who is the clear leader on top of the ladder going through the season undefeated take on Mooroopna who have experienced a mixed season of win, draw and loss. Given that the final is at Mooroopna the question being asked is- Does playing on your home course give the Mooroopna team an edge over the dominant Cobram-Barooga unit?

The Men’s Final will see the East Pool ladder leader Tallygaroopna-Cosgrove take on the West Pool leader Merrigum.

Tallygaroopna-Cosgrove have had another strong season with only one loss which they suffered to Kialla in the last round.   Is that a sign that their good form is slipping?  Kialla finished in second with 3 wins and 2 losses but with a better match score than Shepparton on the same win loss ratio.  Mooroopna who started the season well tailed off and lost their last two matches.

The west pool contest was closer with Merrigum cementing top spot with a big 4/1 win over Rushworth in the last round.  Merrigum finished with 3 wins and 1 loss for 12 points and a match score of 14/6, which was good enough to edge out Hill Top Red 2 wins, 2 draws for 12 points but with a 12.5/7.5 match score.  Valley View finished in third spot 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.

Given the distances to be travelled by teams the Men’s Final will hit off first at 8am with the women’s final to follow at about 8.30am.

The side comment in all of the final story is that the women’s final is between two of the GMGA’s largest clubs while the Men’s final is between two of the smaller clubs.   Good luck to the four teams. Let’s hope the finals are close.
