Winter Pennant Nears Dramatic End
Posted on: 15 July
With the last round and “home and away” matches to be played each of the seven divisions of Sunday winter pennant have some an edge of excitement attached to them. In brief summary the following will transpire on Sunday 21 July:
Women’s Division
Could it be any closer? Four teams, all with one win and one loss each. Cobram-Barooga holding top spot from their big win over Mooroopna in round one. Cobram-Barooga get a home match against Tocumwal and the central neighbours of Mooroopna and Shepparton meet. It looks like the final will be between a northern and a central club. The teams who can win and win well will make the finals.
Division One
The top two teams Numurkah and Shepparton play each other at Cobram-Barooga in what will be a prelude to the final the following week.
Division Two
Second placed Cobram-Barooga play third placed Numurkah in a match up that will decide who finishes in second place to play Shepparton in the final
Division Three
In this Division there are more possibilities to deal with. Top team Ky Valley View get to play at home against second placed Cobram-Barooga. Third placed Shepparton take on fifth placed Parkland. If Shepparton win and Cobram-Barooga lose Shepparton can make it to second place and the final. If Cobram-Barooga can defeat home team Valley View they have a chance to take top spot.
Division Four
Like Division Three, top team Kialla get to play at home against second placed Tocumwal. While third placed Mooroopna play bottom team Rochester. If Tocumwal are defeated and Mooroopna can have a big win, Mooroopna may get into second place to play Kialla in the final. If Tocumwal can defeat Kialla they may send doubts spinning for the final match up the following week.
Division Five
Another similar scenario. The top two teams of Cobram-Barooga and Mooroopna met at Shepparton. While third placed Merrigum take on Valley View. If Mooroopna lose and Merrigum win, Merrigum can make it to the final at the expense of Mooroopna.
Division Six
Second placed Mooroopna play at home against bottom team Hill Top. While experienced top team Shepparton play third placed Nagambie. Surprise wins by Nagambie or Hill Top, and it has happened in the past, could turn the ladder calculations into a spin.
