Pennants Decided

Posted on: 29 July

The morning started with thick fog over the district and the Numurkah course.  The first few Divisions copping the worst of it.  A big thanks must go to Numurkah Club for their organisation and very smooth starting of all matches.  Plus an addition of spotters for the early fog.

Division Six saw the contest between the previously undefeated Shepparton “good old guys” team and neighbours Mooroopna.  The last time these two teams met it was Shepparton who won 3/2. In the final the result was reversed.  Wins to Nick Sidebottom, Cam Dudgeon and Luke Pearson ensured the Mooroopna win.  Vin Chan snuck in against Alan Treves and Ken Baxter defeated Peter Curtis to register the two Shepparton wins.  Mooroopna Club Captain David Young was pleased to thank his pennant team and help take the flag back to their club.

Division Six Mooroopna Winners

Alan Treves, Luke Pearson, Nick Sidebottom, Peter Curtis (capt) Cam Dudgeon

Division Five, Merrigum who won their last home and away match to make it into the final, took on top of ladder Cobram-Barooga.  In some very close individual matches the first two Cobram-Barooga players Alan Haddrilll and Peter Hollands got their team off to a good start.  Then Simon Doherty, Bruce Brown and Corey Berghofer all had strong wins in their matches for Merrigum to give Merrigum a 3/2 victory.

Division Five Winners Merrigum

Bryce Johnson,  Corey Berghofer (capt) Bruce Brown, Simon Doherty & Clinton Prygoda

Division Four.  Kialla went through the home and away season undefeated and expectations were high. The Kialla boys did not disappoint with a strong 4/1 victory over Tocumwal.  A slashing 7/5 win by Jordan Bovalina over Jim Mallis was the only starring light for Tocumwal.  The steady Tom Martin, Kevin Newton, James and Taylor Bicknell all registered comfortable wins to secure Kialla the pennant and an undefeated season

Division Three: This was another Division where ladder leaders Valley View had gone through undefeated and after a flogging by them last week Cobram-Barooga was keen to make amends.  So close!!! Wow.  Colin Rankin made a huge effort for Cobram-Barooga with a win over Michael Gallivan on the 21sthole (well done to both players on the longest match of the final day), Steve Carr notched C-B second win 5/4 over Michael Coyne. Steven Usher registered a win for Valley View on the 19thand Ashley Kuiper won 3/2.  Two matches each.  The final pairing of Miles Gould (VV) and Bryan Eddy (C-B) saw Gould nearly “slam dunk” his tee shot on 18 to tie the match and head down the 19thwhich he won to get Valley View a win in the closest of all team matches and register an undefeated season.

Division Three Winners Valley View

Ashley Kuiper, Miles Gould (capt), Michael Coyne, Steven Usher & Michael Gallivan

Women’s Division:  Cobram-Barooga versus Shepparton.  When these two teams met in the home and away round it was Shepparton who took the honours. In the final Cobram-Barooga got away to a great start with wins to Carolyn Huggins and Jill (“finger signs”) Sheedy.  Then Cristy Ashton won 3/2 for C-B to seal the win. Kim Morris gallantly flew a flag for Shepparton with a win over C-B Captain Rowena Wallace.  With the match decided Margaret Wallace and Suzy Phillips-Limon shook hands for a draw.  Congratulations to Cobram-Barooga for securing the Sunday women’s pennant to add to their mid-week flag.

Division Two:  The first of the scratch divisions saw Shepparton take on Cobram-Barooga (the same clubs as the women’s division).  These two teams had vied for top spot during the season and it was Cobram-Barooga who came out winners in the final.  C-B Team Captain Matt Haddrell got his team away with a strong 4/2 win over Shepparton stalwart Geoff Hall.  Ian Richardson registered another C-B win.  Then Shepparton’s Cameron Keorney managed a win over Peter Nelson on the 20thhole and Hayden Young defeated Benjamin Casley 1up.   Two matches each and the decider was between the top players Mark Corridan C-B and young Shepparton star Bailey Goodall. Bailey sunk a massive putt on 17thto stay in the match but Mark was steady on the 18thto secure his win and the team win for Cobram-Barooga and to share bragging rights with the club’s women’s team

Division Two Winners Cobram-Barooga

Ian Richardson, Ben Casley,  Mark Corridan, Matt Haddrell, Peter Nelson

Division One:  The highest level of inter-club competition to see some of the best golfers in the District do battle.  Shepparton and Numurkah were the top teams all season and many pundits tipped Numurkah after a big win over Shepparton the previous week and the competition to take place on their own course.   Mitch Grandell of Numurkah took the first scalp with a 2/1 win over Shepparton’s Lincoln Ferrari.  Jeremy Rath evened the score with a 3/2 win over Nick Ludington.  Dylan Grandell showed no mercy for Shepparton Captain Luke Dixon to register a comfortable 5/4 win. Leighton Lyle struck back for Shepparton with a 3/2 win over Matt Sellars.  Good golfers’ great matches it may as well be close in the finish. Andrew Storer and Daniel Adem were all square after 18 and headed down the 19thfor another halved hole with Daniel breaking through on the 20thto secure Shepparton the victory and the pleasure of taking the Bert Larson trophy back to their club for the second year running.

Goulburn-Murray Golf Association President David Roberts congratulated all teams at presentations during the day and gave thanks to Numurkah Golf Club for hosting the final event, highlighting the help and friendly service of the catering and bar staff, the grounds staff, the work of Captain Ron Smith and his match committee, especially helpers John and Glenn for starting the teams.    President David also recognised the work of GMGA lady Captain Annie Beveridge for setting up the Golf Box scoring system for results during the season.

In addition the GMGA would like to thank Dylan Grandell for his help with setting up the finals in Golf Box and to David Booth and Rob Woodhouse who assisted and provided advice during the season.

Congratulations to all teams and we look forward to an improved pennant season next year.

Now we head into the Sand green (11 August) and district championships (25 August) and all club officials are reminded of their response to the discussion paper.
