GREAT TEAMS EVENT

The last day of April saw the playing of the District Teams Event at Hill Top course which was in good condition apart from a few problems with recently renovated greens. But when you read the scores below you will easily deduce that the greens were of no concern to the top scoring players.

Although the total number of players was down on last year, it was great to see the number of different clubs represented.

At completion of play, the participants enjoyed a “pick up barbecue lunch” in the dining room before event organiser GMGA Secretary David Roberts commenced presentations with a special welcome to Life Members Iris Hicks and Michael Keen.  Michael played to try to help his team repeat last year’s victory.  Alas not to be.  New GMGA President Alexandra Odell then welcomed all players and thanked them and the Hill Top club for their support before she and Captain Mandy Faram proceeded with presentations.

The sharp shooters for nearest the pins were; 3rd hole Di Davies (Numurkah) and Michael Downs (Hill Top), 6th hole Robyn Downs (Hill Top) and Mick Coyne (Valley View). 9th hole Marita Cornwall (HT) and James Bicknell (Kialla). 14th hole Robyn Downs and David Cornwall (both HT)

The best individual scores of the day for the women was Robyn Downs (Hill Top) 43 points from runner up Di Wood (Shepparton) on 40 points.  For the men it was Rocco Barca (Hill Top) winning with 42 points from Mick Coyne (Valley View) on 40 points.

The emphasis of the day is the aggregate Four Person Teams Event, with the women playing for the Gollan Hicks Kelly (GHK) Shield named after our three female Life Members and the men playing for the Gray Barton Cup named after former Life Member and which has been played for since 1966.

The runners up for the GHK Shield were a Hill Top team on a combined 131 points of Josie De Ieso, Bec Jeffers, Lyn Flett and Heather Long.   Life Member Iris Hicks then helped to present the winners with the Shield in honour of her name to another Hill Top Team with 141 points of Di Day, Robyn Downs, Phyl Fiddes and Lynda O’Shannesy.  [What a day Robyn Downs had!!]

Winners are grinners.  Lynda O’Shannesy, Robyn Downs, Iris Hicks (Life Member) Phyl Fiddes and Di Day

For the men, a Valley View Team put in a big effort to try to get rid of the Hill Top name with Michael Coyne, Miles Gould, Daryl Harrison, and Ed McQuienn returning a team score 135 points.  In his acceptance speech, Team Captain Michael made a good fun reference to the weakest link, but we won’t go into that here.    However, it was another Hill Top team of Ian LeLievre, Steve Curtis, Rocco Barca and Joe De Ieso who won the Gray Barton Cup with a score of 138 points.

The Teams Event is over for another year, with only the trophy engraver to do her work and we can start to plan next year.

The next event on the horizon is the District Mixed to be played at Shepparton GC on Sunday 28 May.  The flier and entry method will be out soon.
