Tomlinson Wins Championship

Posted on: 28 August

Sunday 28 August at the well-presented Cobram-Barooga Golf Course the best golfers of the Goulburn Murray District gathered for a very special event in which the District Championship was combined with the commencement of Super League golf.

At Presentations District President David Roberts thanked the players for their efforts, congratulated the winners and stated “that the new idea combined with the traditional championship event saw the largest field of the best golfers gather for the District Championship in many years”.  In addition Roberts thanked Numurkah’s Andrew Storer for initiating and bringing his concept of Super League to the GMGA Committee and District Captain Shane Halloran for setting up the details and entry system.

Chris Tomlinson playing on his home course won the District Championship with a round of 71, one under the card which was a great score on the long west course at Barooga.  Runner up to Chris was the 2020 Champion Brett Kellow (Mooroopna) 74 and in third place Matt Miller (Hill Top Tatura), last year’s Champion with a 77.

The Super League concept is aimed at bringing the best golfers of the District together to strengthen their competition to a level above normal club golf.  President Roberts stated that the GMGA Committee were keen to support Super League following a detailed and well thought out presentation made to it by Andrew Storer.  It adds a touch of difference in bringing the best players from a variety of clubs together with entry restriction of Golf Australia handicap of 7 or less.  As this develops over the next year it will provide a great opportunity to improve selection for the District’s Country Teams Event and enable the Committee to provide support for the best players in the Order of Merit system to play in State wide events.

Andrew Storer provided more explanation for players and congratulated the winners as he announced the score and let David Roberts shake their hands and deliver prizes.  Andrew emphasised that the competition is focused on scratch scores but with an annual Order of Merit for net scores as well.  The prize winners of Division One (handicaps less than 2) were the same as for the District Championships, Tomlinson, Kellow and Miller and for Division Two Paul Capper (Hill Top Tatura) won with 78 followed by Nick Giles (Cobram-Barooga) on a count back from John Thompson (Tocumwal) both with 79.

To conclude the day the President thanked the Captain and Staff of Cobram-Barooga Golf Club for their support and gave special thanks to Nick Ludington for his help to Andrew in establishing Super League and to Tri Star Fencing and The Hot and Cold Shop for their support for “hopping on board” with sponsorship when the Super League season gets underway.  More information will be sent to clubs soon as the next three events are scheduled for Numurkah on 23 October.
