Goulburn Murray Golf Finals

Posted on: 21 February

The finals of the Goulburn Murray Interclub Pennant were played at Kyabram Valley View on Sunday in warm to hot conditions.  Special thanks go to the Valley View Club for its efforts with course presentation, catering and hospitality.

In the women’s final, ladder leader Cobram-Barooga took on Shepparton Blue with three pair making up the team.   A tough gig for the Cobram-Barooga players who had spent the previous days as volunteers at the big TPS Tournament at their home club.   However, let’s not take anything away from the Shepparton team for their determination, a couple of whom played at Valley View on the Saturday to get an idea of the course.

Shepparton Team Captain Sally Nayler with Margaret Oldfield lead from the start with a convincing 4/3 win.  Adele Baensch and Sally Phillips-Limon had a close tussle with Trish Scandrett and Helen Hall and managed a win with a couple of holes to go.  The final Shepparton pairing of Jacinta Harrington and Lyn Cogger proved too strong for Cobram-Barooga’s Marg Wallace and Veronica Irving.  So in the end it was a great 3/0 victory to Shepparton.

The men’s final saw the combined Club Rushworth/Merrigum team take on Hill Top Tatura with teams consisting of five pair.  As would be hoped for a finial the team contest was very close. Rush/Merrigum first pair of Alan Akerstrom and Tony Geisler proved that steady golf is better than the long wayward variety with a big win over Nicholson and Montgomery.  Hill Top struck back with a good win to Guiney – McNair combination followed by a win to Rushworth’s father and son pair of Jeff and Sam Perry over Deller and Perry.  Hill Top’s Team Captain Travis Worm and partner Ryan Lindsay notched up a win over Sanders – Rathjen.  So at this stage; four matches played and two all.   The final group clash nearly went to the wire with Rush/Merrigum pair Prygoda and Hall just too good for Davies and Nicholson 2 up with 1 to play.   Put all those pair matches together and the team results was 3/2 win to Rushworth/Merrigum team.

At presentations, GMGA President David Roberts, thanked Valley View for hosting the event, congratulated all the teams for their effort and for their co-operation and the spirit in which the games were played.  GMGA Captains Mandy Faram and Shane Halloran made the presentations of Pennants and prizes to each of the team members before the Team Captains thanked Valley View, their opponents and the GMGA organisers for the Pennant season.
