District Golf Pennant Report

Posted on: 25 January

The Goulburn Murray District Fourball Golf Pennant is now in full swing, with two Men’s Divisions and One Women’s Division playing the interclub competition.

Last Sunday the East Division Men and the Women’s Division played at host club Numurkah.  In the Women’s Division the two Shepparton Teams, Blue and Gold faced off against one another in what turned out to be a very close tussle.  The first two pairs were all even after the eighteen holes for half points each.  Then Sally Nayler and Jo Rathjen really turned it on for the Blues to record a 4 up and 2 holes to play win against Estelle Houlihan and Julie Hutchins; to give the Blues a 2 matches to one victory

Hill Top Tatura and Cobram-Barooga were the other women’s contenders.  Bec Jeffers and Marita Cornwall got Hill Top off to a flier with a 5up 4 to play win.  This was then evened out with the same result for the Cobram-Barooga team in the next pairings.  The final match saw Cobram-Barooga Captain Marg Wallace and her partner Veronica Irving play steady controlled golf to defeat Mandy McGrath and Sherryl Curran 2/1 to secure a 2 matches to 1 victory for the Cobram-Barooga Team and take top position on the ladder.

In the Men’s East Division Mooroopna scored their first win of the season with a 3/2 win over Shepparton. Shepparton had the first two matches on the score sheet before Mooroopna charged home securing the final three matches.  It was reported that new Mooroopna Captain Steve Nioa was all smiles after a personal win with his partner and the first team win for the season.

In the other team match Hill Top Tatura took on Kialla/Cosgrove and the first two groups out registered some incredible results with a 7/5 win to Kialla/Cosgrove and then a 7/6 win to Hill Top.  These were followed by a 6/4 and 2/1 wins to the respective teams until the final pairing of Kialla Captain Ross Campbell and Jason Welsh continued with their form of the past couple of weeks for a 3/1 win to secure a 3 matches to 2 win for Kialla/Cosgrove and a jump to top of the ladder.

The men’s West Division started at Nagambie on Sunday.   The host team were able to get a win against the usual strong Valley View team.  David Collins and Dom Cerrone fired up the valley View boys with a good 5/4 win, only to see the Nagambie members claw back.  At a tense two matches each situation Nagambie club stalwarts Barry Cryer and Graeme Galvin won on the last hole to get their home team a win.

The remaining match saw combined club Rushworth – Merrigum team take on Hill Top Red. In pair matches that were mostly around the 3up 2 to play results, Rushworth-Merrigum posted a couple of wins early followed by two wins to Hill Top, one a which was a desperate hang on fight back by Hill Top Captain Michael Mulcahy and Danyel Dryden against the father and son Cheong combination.  All in vain as Jeff Perry and Ian Rathjen dished out a lesson to Bryce Wellington and John Owen to bring home the win for the Rushworth/Merrigum combination team.
