Pennant Finalists Decided

Posted on: 22 February

Last Sunday saw the playing of the Men’s Summer Fourball Pennant semi-finals at Hill Top Tatura.  A drama writer could not have scripted a closer more exciting plot.  Top team of East division Hill Top Blue played second placed in West division which was colleagues Hill Top Red and the top of West Division Kyabram Valley View played second placed of East division Kialla-Cosgrove

Ky Valley View (VV) and Kialla-Cosgrove (KC) won the toss for the first tee and first out was also first finished with Tom Martin/Kevin Newton (KC) defeating Peter Blackmore/Lawrie Casey (VV) 4/2 which ended up being the biggest winning margin of the day.  Then VV pair Michael Gallivan/Michael Coyne def Tom Estrada/Tom Jeffery 3/1.  The final pairings of Tim Gubbins/Peter Jeffery (KC) defeated Ashley and Paul Kuiper (VV) 2/1.  Meanwhile the third and fourth pairing were all square after eighteen holes and needed to continue.  Daryl Harrison/Ed McQuienn (VV) managed to win the nineteenth against Allan Farrell/Jim Mallis (KC) to make it both team with two wins each.  It then took the remaining pairs to play twenty two holes to get a winner where Mario Gagliardi/Dallas Hill (KC) snuck in over David Collins/Dom Cerrone (VV).  The overall match could not have been closer.  A bit disappointing for Ky Valley View as this was their first loss of the season. Congratulations to Kialla-Cosgrove who will now play in the final against Hill Top Red at Shepparton GC next Sunday.

Starting on the tenth tee the two Hill Top teams were well into stirring each other before a ball had been hit as much was at stake for bragging rights.   All expectations were for close contests and the results showed expectations were correct. In the pairs matches Josh Danaher/Scott Perry (red) defeated Ryan Lindsay/Brad Ciavarella 3/2, Col Barlow/Dylan Burls (red) def Terry Olney/Jarrod Taylor 2/1,  Linc and Bryce Wellington (red) lost to Ty Guiney/Dale McNair 1 down, James Peck/Jono Kerrins (red) def Tim Nicholson /Travis Worm 1 up Ashley Blake/Daniel Maher (red) lost to Matt Miller/Alex Bell 1 down. Three of the pair matches all decided on the eighteenth hole, you can’t get much closer.  So with three pair wins to Red and two to Blue it will be Red who goes through to the final at Shepparton G C next Sunday, where they will play Kialla/Cosgrove.

In summary and probably more by chance than any reason, it was the two teams who had finished second in their divisions who won the semi-finals.  It will be a fascinating final next Sunday.

Whilst the men were battling out the semi-final the women were playing the last round of their season of the Australian Award Winning Innovation of Virtual Pennant.  Shepparton Gold continued on their winning run with a 2/1 win over Tocumwal White to remain on top of the ladder. Shepparton Navy also clinched a 2/1 win over Tocumwal Green to get back on track after a shock loss a couple of weeks ago.  In the big decider for second spot Hill Top had a 2/1 victory over Mooroopna.  Janette Hayward and Mandy McGrath starred for Hill Top with 46 points to equal the best score of the season.  Hill Top secured second spot and will take on Shepparton Gold at Shepparton in real match play on Sunday.   The Shepparton team will start favourites, but we have seen before that big expectations can make you shake when you are playing at home.

Good luck to the Men’s and Women’s finalists.
