Shepparton Women Smiling

Monday 2 December 2019 saw the final of women’s mid –week summer pennant played at Hill Top Tatura.  The Shepparton Navy team had finished on top of the North East Zone and Valley View Hills team the top of the South West Zone.  The event was marred by the cold and the high winds although thanks must go to Hill Top staff and volunteers for their efforts in trying to present the course.

Kerryn Pickworth and Judy Holland got Shepparton off to a great start with a 5/4 win which was followed by Robyn Nind and Paula Dixon who got home 1 up against Gay Henderson and Anne Hawking.  The next two Shepparton pairs of Lynley Eadie and Rose Priestly and Anne Pegg and Lyn Gogger both managed 4/3 wins.  Valley View did not throw in the towel and Helen Emery and Judy Greer fought hard for a 1 up win over Mandy Farram and Suzy Phillips-Limon.  However, when the arithmetic is done it reveals a 4/1 win to Shepparton Navy.

Both Team Captains, Lynley Eadie for Shepparton and Leanne Busch from Valley View thanked their team members for their efforts not only on the day but for the season. Similarly they thanked Hill Top for hosting the day and the GMGA officials for organising the final and the season of Monday pennant.

The new GMGA Captain Shane Halloran and Secretary Ros Seymour presented the trophies while GMGA President David Roberts called the card of winners and placegetters for the day.

The accompanying photos show the two pennant teams.

While the Pennant final was being contested a good field of women played in a 4BBB Stableford competition where the winners from Cobram-Barooga Chris Crawford and Edna Lloyd won with an impressive 47 points.  In second place from Shepparton Rose Tyquin and Heather Phillips with 46 points.  Nearest the pins went to Norma Pollock on the ninth and Rose Tyquin on the fourteenth— an easy birdie to for Rose.  Balls down the line went to Ronda Richards and Annette Mills from Nagambie on 46 points, Rita Glidden and Rose O’Brien from Mooroopna 43 points and also with 43 points, Fiona Hand and Norma Pollack from Shepparton and Gaye Edwards and Natalie Beard from Tocumwal.

President David then handed over to Helen Emery, who kept all the records, to announce the Player of the Year.  This went to Shireen Moore from Shepparton.  Another smile and cheer to add to the Shepparton celebrations.

Hill Top Captain, Bev Roberts presented a hole in one trophy of mounted ball to Dot Britt, also from Shepparton, to congratulate her on her great achievement on the third hole at Hill Top a few weeks ago  during the pennant season.

To finish the formalities of the day and before handing over the Hill Top Women’s President Liz Mulcahy to take charge of raffle prizes, GMGA President David Roberts thanked Annie Beveridge for whom the day was her least day in office as GMGA Women’s Captain and on behalf of the GMGA and especially all the women players gave Annie a bunch of flowers.

We now look forward to Summer Sunday pennant starting early in the New Year.
