Vic Boys Championships. 2010

 Sunday, September 12, 2010
The Vic Boys Championship tees off this year on Monday 20th Sept at Long Island GC. The 2nd Round to be played at Royal Melbourne GC, on Tuesday  21st Sept.

We have 3 Boys in the field this year, Luke Petherick (Mooroopna) Lach Devine (Shepparton) & Kyle Michel (Shepparton).

The format is, 2 rounds stroke play, best 8 players move through to the match play rounds which start on the Wednesday. To win this event, 5 rounds on great courses, it will take a lot of great golf & focus.

Luke will compete in the Open under 18 age group. He will start the event as a major contender after his form over the last 6 months. Luke will need to out play Ben Rogers, Ben Eccles, Sean Ong and the like. Luke can play at the top level, if the A game is on we may see a good week. I don't believe we have had a Vic boys Champion from the GV. Luke is a good chance.

Kyle will compete in the under 14 age group. He also will be out for a good tournament, currently sitting 7th on the Geoff Ogilvy Rankings in his age group. Kyle's group has Fraser Droop from Yarrawonga, he is out to win the grandslam of junior golf. Droop has won the waverley Masters & the Vic Championships already this year. Can Kyle stop Droop, I think he can. It will be a fun (long) week, lets hope we see a Michel V Droop listing on Friday, (Kingswood Gc) the final.

Lach will complete in the under 16 age group. A tough group, Lach will be looking to make the top 8 come Tuesday night, predicted 83,83 may get him into Wednesday. This may be higher due to Sean Ong & Ben Eccles possibility qualifiering in the open group therefore moving the score out for the under 16 group.

The 3 boys have been to this tournament before, if they, be patient, stay focused & enjoy the week, the result will looking after it's self.

I will post updates through the tournament.

GV Junior results from Div 1 Regional teams Championships

 Monday, August 16, 2010
Over the weekend the GV Junior Team played in the Div1 Country Regional Teams Championship at Heathcote GC in conditions that caused ducks to shelter from the elements.  Strong winds and squally rain made scoring difficult for our team compared to those districts like Peninsula and Geelong who are used to it.

After the first days competition the GV boys were sitting 7th of the 8 teams, only one shot in front of last placed Corrangamite.  With the final two placings finding themselves relegated to Div2 for the following year a big second day rally was required.

To the boys credit their average scores improved by 4 shots per player which saw them jump from 7th to 5th place and hold their spot in Div1 for 2011.

Luke Petherick and Mitch Grandell were the best performed GV players over the two days.  All scores can be found on the links below.

Course Rating Seminar 6th June Bendigo

Course Rating Seminar - Bendigo 6th June

The VGA and WGV will be conducting a Course Rating Seminar in Bendigo, on Sunday the 6th June, 2010.

The seminar will run most of the day, and further details will be provided to those who indicate an interest in learning how to rate a golf course as per the USGA system.

Mr Murray Cropley will be providing information at the seminar, and it is hoped that each district will then be able to form their own rating teams. This will then allow district teams to rate courses in their own district, and have us well prepared for the introduction of the complete handicapping system.

For those who can make it, the rating team is possibly rating Bendigo Golf Club on the Monday after the seminar, and Neangar park on the Tuesday, these ratings are yet to be  confirmed.

After the seminar, it is hoped that we can put together an infomation pack for all clubs, on what the course rating team would like the course to do, to make the rating session quicker, easier and smoother. When the club has done the pre-requisites, we hopefully may be able to put together a timetable for all courses in the area to be rated.

Background Information

The course ratings be calculated over three markers for most courses, Blue, White and Red.

It is assumed that a male Scratch golfer will hit his drive 230 YARDS and have 20 YARDS of roll. A male Bogey golfer (handicap 20) will drive 180 YARDS off the tee, and have 20 YARDS of roll. A Scratch golfer will then hit his next shot 200 YARDS and have 20 YARDS of roll, a Bogey golfer will hit his second shot a maximum of 150 YARDS and 20 YARDS of roll , 170 YARDS in total. A Scratch golfer is expected to reach a 470 YARD hole in 2 shots, and a Bogey golfer reach a 370 YARD hole in 2 shots. You may ask why the YARDS are in capital letters, this is to make the point that all measurements are in YARDS for the USGA Course rating system, not metres.

At each point where a shot lands or is be made, 12 items are taken into account to determine the rating of the hole.

Junior Pennant - Postponed

 Monday, March 15, 2010

Breaking News:

The Goulburn Valley District Golf Association have decided to postpone the Junior Winter Pennant Competition. It will now be held during the October-November period.

There were a number of reasons for the deferment:

1.    Football commitments by a number of Juniors.

2.    Lack of numbers at this time of the year.

3.    The later season will then work in with the Stuart Appleby/Geoff Ogilvy Junior Tournaments.

4.    Difficulty in getting venues when considering the number of pennant matches being played.

5.    This will allow the juniors who wish to play, a chance of playing in the open pennant competition, both scratch and handicap.

The GVDGA Executive will send out the pennant draw for the winter season shortly, and will keep all advised about the Junior Pennant.

If you have any comments on this decision, please post them in the comment section below.

Both the boys qualified by winning their age group, at the Wodonga Junior Masters which was held in early Jan.
